Complete with its Paraffin tail lamp, a Newton Heath allocated Cravens Class 105 Power-Twin formed of cars M50761 & M50788, was stood at a snowy Bamber Bridge with a Preston to Colne service on January 27th 1979. On a bright Winter day, A Cravens Class 105 power-twin with Driving Motor Composite Lavatory M50801 at the rear, was stood at Bamber Bridge with a Preston to Colne service on January 27th 1979. On that cold day that Cravens would have no doubt been warm on the inside, complete with its oily/diesel smell aroma. What price now a ride to Colne in first class with a view of the line through the rear cab? Martyn Hilbert.

Taken with a long-lens, a Derby Class 108 two-car DMU formed of cars M51925 & M52037 was approaching Bamber Bridge with a Colne to Preston service on August 10th 1979. At the time the stone built Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway waiting room was still standing on the eastbound platform, along with the subway buildings adjacent to the level crossing. The 108 had just passed under what was a historic bridge. The brick built structure was the first in the UK that took a Motorway over a railway line, the M6 Preston By-pass opening for business in December 1958 and was the first stretch of motorway in Britain. The bridge was enlarged and altered when the M6 was widened in the late 1990's. Martyn Hilbert.

Almost funicular style, as one Cravens Class 105 arrives at Bamber Bridge with the 13.46 Colne to Preston, another has departed on the 14.30 Preston to Colne working. In this scene from August 23rd 1980, DMBS M50771 passes over the A6 trunk road about to make its last stop on the way to Preston. In the foreground the old L&Y subway is still in existance, note the youngster on a 1970's Chopper pushbike waiting on the pavement! The Newton Heath based Cravens Power-Twin sets, dominated the services along the East Lancashire Line during the 1970's. Martyn Hilbert.

Bringing up the rear of a well-loaded four-car Preston to Colne service, Cravens Class 105 Power-Twin Driving Composite Lavatory car M50804 was stood at Bamber Bridge on May 13th 1981. A familiar daily sight along the East Lancashire line from the late 1960's, the then (1981) well-worn Newton Heath fleet of power-twins would shortly have started to be withdrawn from service. The local track gang had their yellow liveried BMC crew bus parked in the station car park. Martyn Hilbert.

A Cravens Class 105 Power-Twin with Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M50772 at the rear, was awaiting departure from Bamber Bridge with a Preston to Colne service on May 15th 1981. The Newton Heath allocated Power-Twin sets were once synonymous with the ex L&Y lines in Lancashire and were regular performers on the East Lancashire route from Preston to Colne. Just visible in the distance is the brick bridge that takes the M6 Motorway across the railway. The bridge was the first to carry a Motorway across a railway in the UK, with the M6 Preston By-Pass between Bamber Bridge (now junction 29) and Broughton (now junction 32) that opened in December 1958. Martyn Hilbert.

The opposite platform was still low-height, and included some wooden steps as access to the doors of DMU's for those whose mobility was not great. Martyn Hilbert.

The leading car is M52054 complete with its first class saloon behind the cab. Looking at the cab front the car has been in the wars, and a piece of plywood across the former headcode box typifies the state that many of the local DMUs were in around this period. Martyn Hilbert.

Martyn Hilbert.
